BitTorrent's audacious P2P-powered Project Maelstrom browser enters public beta

On Friday, Project Maelstrom for Windows enters public beta and is available for anyone to download from BitTorrent's site. BitTorrent says a Mac version is coming soon, but there are no immediate plans for a Linux build.

Maelstrom is a Chromium-based browser that can function as a regular browser that accesses sites over standard HTTP/HTTPS protocols. The program also contains the ability to grab websites packaged as torrents and display them.

Although it's a Chromium-based browser, BitTorrent isn't officially supporting Chrome extensions and apps from the Chrome Web Store. Nevertheless, you can still install content from the Web Store and a lot of it should work, the company says.

Why this matters: The idea behind Maelstrom is simple: if the web relied on BitTorrent peer-to-peer file sharing technology, accessing web content could become much faster and more reliable than it is today. While the web's server-client architecture works pretty well, sites can often slow down or become inaccessible when servers fail or are overwhelmed by too many requests at once. Theoretically, BitTorrent-packaged sites would never go down as long as you could grab the site's files from another user.

New Telemeeting from Google “GMeet”

Teleconferencing is all the rage with businesses in the internet age, and Google is just as poised as anyone to provide a platform suitable for the types of corporate meetings that have to take place in such a manner. If Hangouts video calling wasn't already enough, the company could be working on a standalone platform meant specifically for businesses.

You sign in, you join a meeting, and you (presumably) conference over voice and/or video.

Kiersch says the app only accepts Googler logins right now, so it’s unclear if this is a tool meant for internal use by Google or if it’s a user-facing service where the prerequisite only exists to make sure prying eyes can’t get an early look at what’s inside ahead of any official announcement.

Searches for G Meet and Google Meeting pull upinteresting anecdotes and code snippets from as far back as 2011, but most of the code references things we already have access to in the latest rendition of Hangouts, such as whiteboards, screen sharing, and integration with Google Calendar. A URL that once existed in the code (google.com/talk/meet) also now redirects to Hangouts’ main landing page.

A standalone meeting app would likely use Hangouts technology for its backbone so there’s nothing out of the ordinary than meets the eye. But until we can get into the app for ourselves or get an announcement from Google, we’re left to our educated guesses. Let’s hope to hear more in the very near future!

The Elementary OS team’s focus on minimalism extends beyond Luna’s user interface. Elementary OS Luna comes with only the most basic applications pre-installed.

Amongst these applications are:

• Empathy, an internet messaging client
• Scratch, a text editor

On the whole, though, Elementary OS Luna is a good Linux distro that will definitely appeal to users looking for a stable and smooth OS that manages to provide some of Mac OS X’s visual polish and consistent user experience.

Elementary OS Luna will never replace Mac OS X, that’s for sure but, for users who are unable to run the latest version of Mac OS X on their computers, Elementary OS Luna is definitely worth a try.

New Firefox version delivers Chrome-clone UI redesign to World+Dog

Firefox 29 has left beta to become the latest stable release for desktop PCs and Android devices, bringing with it a long-promised UI overhaul, new customization options, and an improved data sync feature.

Mozilla senior user experience designer Jennifer Morrow compared the old Firefox UI to a sinking ship and said one could think of the redesign as "a new hull."

"It's not an interface adjustment or tweak," Morrow wrote. "It's not a bug fix. It's a complete re-envisioning of Firefox's user experience, and it's been brewing for the past five years."
Long story short, the Mozilla browser's "Australis" redesign means it is now virtually a dead ringer for Google's Chrome, although it does offer a few unique features if you look past the surface.
Gone is the familiar orange Firefox menu in the upper left of the desktop browser window. In its place is a new menu to the right of the URL bar (just like Chrome) that's activated by clicking an icon of three lines stacked on top of each other (just like Chrome).

Firefox 29 also marks the official debut of the improved Sync feature, which is powered by Mozilla's new Firefox Accounts – yet another Chrome-ish concept. The new service is now included in both the desktop and Android versions of the browser.
Overall, if you were pleased with the design decisions Google made with Chrome, you'll be happy with Firefox's new direction, which Mozilla say was designed "to reflect how you use the Web today." If, on the other hand, you preferred how you used the web yesterday, you might be disappointed.
One thing Firefox prides itself on, however, is its high degree of customizability. If you don't like the new defaults, Firefox 29 still supports over 300,000 available Appearance Add-Ons, including so-called Complete Themes that can change the look and feel of the browser radically.

Firefox 29 is available for download now from Mozilla's homepage and from the Google Play store for Android devices, and it will begin rolling out to current users via the browser's built-in update feature over the coming days. ®

GOOGLE SCIENCE FAIR 2014

The Google Science Fair is an online science competition sponsored by Google, Lego, CERN, National Geographic and Scientific American.It was announced in January 2011; all entries were due at 11:59:59 pm Eastern Daylight Time on April 7, 2011 and judging occurred in July 2011. The competition is open to 13–18 year old students around the globe, who formulate a hypothesis, perform an experiment, and present their results.All students must have an internet connection and a free Google Account to participate, as the projects are submitted through Google Sites in English, German, Italian, Spanish, or French.The final submission must include ten sections, which are the summary, an "About Me" page, the steps of the project, and a works cited page.

Entries are judged on eight core criteria, which include the student's presentation, question, hypothesis, research, experiment, data, observations, and conclusion.Prizes are awarded to three finalists. The grand prize includes a National Geographic trip to the Galapagos Islands, a US$50,000 scholarship, and an "experience" at a sponsoring organization; finalists will receive a US$25,000 scholarship and assorted packages from sponsoring organizations.While Larry Page and Sergey Brin were PhD students at Stanford University in California, they created Google in January 1996 as a research project; Google employee Tom Oliveri highlighted the company's early days: "Science fairs help students to explore their vision and curiosity through science. Our company was founded on an experiment. We firmly believe that science can change the world," he stated.
